Community celebrates as the Queen's Baton comes to town
Morwell residents are being alerted to street closures on Sunday as the Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay makes its way from the Centenary Rose Garden to Immigration Park at Kernot Hall.
17 baton bearers will carry it through the town, with the final leg into the park by Paralympian and Latrobe City Young Citizen of the Year 2017 Emily Beecroft.
The special celebration will run between 10am and 1pm with live music from the Strzelecki Stringbusters and Damien Leith.
Another Baton Relay event will be held in Warragul on Sunday afternoon.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White said it's a delight to host the Morwell stage of the GC2018 Queen’s Baton Relay and the Community Celebration.
“Hosting the Queen’s Baton Relay is not only an exciting opportunity for us, it’s a way to highlight and promote the Latrobe City community to people in Australia and the world who have been following the Queen’s Baton’s extraordinary journey,” Cr White said.
The community is being encouraged to line the streets and support the baton bearers.
“It’s also a wonderful way to celebrate the people that make our community great.”
