Paynesville's NYE fireworks have been saved

The annual New Year's Eve fireworks carnival in Paynesville has been saved.

A group of six Paynesville people formed a committee called Paynesville Community Events to run the event when the town's Lions Club found it wasn't able to continue their involvement.

The group embarked on a fundraising campaign, needing to raise $10,000, and businesses and the public have responded enthusiastically and generously.

There is still a little bit to find, but enough has been raised for the committee to say "It's a goer!"

"We still have a few thousand to raise, but the East Gippsland Community have pulled off a massive effort and brought the fireworks back for 2018," said group member Cherie Draper.

The New Year's Eve fireworks are a well-loved tradition in Paynesville and a boost the town's tourism economy.

The group will have market stalls, food Vans and kids entertainment from 4pm; live entertainment from 6pm; and the fireworks display at 10pm.

"We will have just the one fireworks show this year, due to the limited time we had to organise the event," Cherie said. "But we will have two shows again in 2019."

"I'm seriously impressed with the amount of support we've had from locals and businesses, not only in fundraising, but in sharing the information and keeping the drive going strong," she said.
